Employment Counsel will be a member of the Vail Resorts’ legal team and will be a strategic partner providing employment-related legal advice to various divisions of the company. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of employment law experience and will be able to handle a wide range of legal questions with practical solutions, will communicate confidently and clearly with business clients (including executives and front line employees), manage competing priorities and thrive in a fast paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice, counsel and support to Human Resources, Employment Investigations, HR Compliance, HR Programs, and senior leaders on an array of employment law matters including accommodations, discipline, compensation, leaves of absences, meal and rest periods, FMLA, FLSA issues, EEO requirements, social media, separations, and policies and procedures in order to reduce legal risk to the company

  • Prepare responses to EEOC and state fair employment agency discrimination charges and other types of employment-related agency complaints, such as federal and state departments of labor

  • Monitor state and federal employment legislation and governmental agency enforcement priorities and advise of developments that may or will affect the organization

  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of legal training to HR and business leaders

  • Supervise and/or partner with internal and outside counsel in employment-related adversarial proceedings in most effective and efficient manner

  • Adhere to and support standards and goals of the company and the legal department

  • Assist in managing legal budgets

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • JD from accredited law school and active state bar license required

  • Minimum 5 years’ legal experience focused in employment law, with significant time devoted to advice and counseling; in-house experience with a major corporation strongly preferred

  • An agile and flexible thinker, with the ability to quickly learn new areas of the law and the business

  • An adept communicator, capable of distilling complex information into concise summaries supporting thoughtful, well-reasoned recommendations

  • Demonstrated commitment to providing exceptional service to business clients

  • Demonstrated judgment and ability to analyze problems, propose resolutions, and provide advice that is creative, practical and reflects strong legal acumen

  • Creative problem solver with strong organizational and time management skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work under high pressure conditions and to successfully handle urgent situations with patience and diplomacy

  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage a variety of assignments and prioritize activities in a fast-paced, demanding environment

  • Demonstrated accountability and keen ability to meet aggressive deadlines

  • A resourceful self-starter, results and success-oriented, with the ability to ensure timely follow through by company employees

  • Willingness to travel to the company’s various resorts, including some overnight travel

  • Must have a passion for promoting a positive, productive culture that furthers the company mission of "Experience of a Lifetime"

  • Ability to build credibility quickly and provide strong legal support for complex and challenging business opportunities while positively and successfully managing relationships within diverse groups of stakeholders
