The Mountain Resort Counsel will be a member of the Vail Resorts’ legal team, and will be a strategic partner to the Mountain Operations, Real Estate Development, and Environmental Compliance and Sustainability divisions of the company. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of experience and will be able to handle a wide range of legal questions with practical solutions, will communicate confidently and clearly with business clients (including executives and front line employees), manage competing priorities and thrive in a fast paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Providing legal advice, counsel and support to the Mountain Operations, Real Estate Development and Environmental Divisions regarding year-round ski and summer resort operations, including regulatory compliance, land use, water rights, government permits, and advising on relationships and agreements with local governments, HOAs, metro districts, real estate developers, private landowners, water supply companies, utilities and other entities

  • Drafting and negotiating a wide variety of agreements, including real estate purchase and sale agreements, hotel management and property management agreements, HOA management agreements, commercial leases, special event agreements, confidentiality agreements, and letters of intent for potential transactions

  • Collaborating with guest and employee operations and health and safety personnel to assist in developing company policies, procedures and best practices to reduce legal risks to the company

  • Partnering with other departments on a wide range of legal matters relating to resort operations, including parking obligations, employee housing, association management, and entitlements

  • Assisting in the preparation and presentation of legal training to Mountain Division and other department personnel

  • Adhering to and support standards and goals of the company and the legal department

  • Assist in managing legal budgets

  • Manage outside counsel on a wide variety of complex matters

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and JD from accredited law school required.

  • Minimum 5 years’ legal experience

  • Active state bar license. If out of state license, successful applicant will be required to apply for Colorado single-client bar license (or full Colorado bar license).

  • An agile and flexible thinker, with the ability to quickly learn new areas of the law and the business

  • An adept communicator, capable of distilling complex information into concise summaries supporting thoughtful, well-reasoned recommendations

  • Demonstrated commitment to providing exceptional service to business clients

  • Demonstrated judgment and ability to analyze problems, propose resolutions, and provide advice that is creative, practical and reflects strong legal acumen

  • Creative problem solver with strong organizational and time management skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work under high pressure conditions and to successfully handle urgent situations with patience and diplomacy

  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage a variety of assignments and prioritize activities in a fast-paced, demanding environment

  • Demonstrated accountability and keen ability to meet aggressive deadlines

  • A resourceful self-starter, results and success-oriented, with the ability to ensure timely follow through by company employees

  • Willingness to travel to the company’s various resorts, including some overnight travel

  • Ability to build credibility quickly and provide strong legal support for complex and challenging business opportunities while positively and successfully managing relationships within diverse groups of stakeholders

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working in a sophisticated in house or national law firm environment or combination of the two

  • Experience drafting, negotiating, and interpreting complex transactions

  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service orientation

  • Strong team player with the ability to adapt and work well with a variety of personalities

  • Superior written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Proficiency with skiing or snowboarding, or a willingness to learn
